Eyelid surgery offers a simple way to turn back time.
Dr. Barbara K. Siwy, your Carmel, IN, plastic surgeon, explains how eyelid surgery can rejuvenate your appearance.
How can eyelid surgery help me?
Eyelid surgery, formally called blepharoplasty, can improve the appearance of upper or lower eyelids or both lids. It’s often used to treat:
- Fatty deposits in the lower eyelids that can make your eyes look puffy
- Sagging skin in the upper eyelids
- Vision impairments due to drooping or loose upper eyelids
- Wrinkles around the lower eyelids
- Bags under your eyes,
How is eyelid surgery performed?
Your Carmel, IN plastic surgeon will remove extra fat and loose skin after making incisions in your eyelids. At the conclusion of the surgery, the incision will be closed with stitches. The surgery usually only takes an hour or two.
What is the recovery period like?
You can expect to see some bruising and swelling for a day or two after surgery. Applying cool compresses will help reduce swelling. Your plastic surgeon may also recommend that you use ointment to keep the eye area lubricated. Your eyelids may feel a little tight at first, but most people who have eyelid surgery don’t experience any significant pain. You’ll return to your plastic surgeon’s office on the fifth or sixth day following surgery for stitch removal.
You can return to work seven to 10 days after the procedure, but you’ll need to avoid participating in strenuous activity for three weeks. Although some bruising may still be evident at this point, it can be easily covered with a little makeup. If you normally wear contact lenses, you’ll need to wear glasses for at least two weeks after surgery.
