What is breast augmentation and what is involved in the procedure?

Beast AugmentationThanks to great strides in modern medicine, plastic surgery is safer and more advanced than ever. Many women feel self-conscious of their breasts, especially later in life.

Breast augmentation surgically places implants into the breast tissue to alter the shape, size or fullness of the breasts.

This procedure can help you restore confidence in your body.

Before Surgery

Before your surgery, you should take several important steps. At least two weeks before your surgery, you should stop smoking completely. The chemicals in cigarettes will greatly complicate your healing process. You should also stop taking any blood-thinning medications and supplements.

You will be under anesthesia, meaning you will be unable to drive after the procedure. You should have someone lined up to drive you to and from your surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours afterward. At least a week before surgery, you should stop drinking alcohol. Take a shower the day of your augmentation, and be sure not to apply any lotions, creams or deodorants.

The Procedure

The breast augmentation procedure begins with general anesthesia to sedate you during the surgery. Incisions are made either around the nipple, under the breast or in the armpit. The location of the incisions depends on the kind of implant used and the degree of enlargement desired.

The implant itself can be placed either in front of or behind the pectoral muscle. The incisions are closed with sutures which are layered throughout the tissue. Visible results are immediate.

Recovery

Someone will need to stay with you for the first 24 hours after you get out of surgery. You should only walk with assistance, and try to rest as much as possible. You should not go to the bathroom alone the first night.

The first four days of recovery will be the most uncomfortable. From there, your wounds will begin to heal and any swelling will begin to go down. Most patients’ recoveries take about 4-6 weeks.
