Breast lift surgery is a plastic surgery procedure that raises and reshapes the breasts. This surgery can be performed to reduce the size of areolas too. If you have breasts that have lost volume due to pregnancy or weight loss, breast implants can be inserted during this surgery to increase their size. When you’re looking to change the appearance of your breasts, opt for plastic surgery in Carmel, Indiana, with Dr. Barbara Siwy from Siwy Plastic Surgery.
About the Breast Lift Procedure
The breast lift surgical procedure itself takes about an hour and a half under general anesthesia. The procedure itself will vary depending on the patient, their existing breast tissue, and desired final look. Different incisions are used in different situations. For instance, for someone that wants breast tissue lifted and tightened, an anchor-shaped incision may be used that follows the breast’s natural shape. This makes it more undetectable after the fact.
Plastic surgery in Carmel, Indiana, with Dr. Siwy, from Siwy Plastic Surgery, can help patients of all ages have the breasts they dream of. After breast lift surgery, the breasts will feel swollen, bruises and uncomfortable for a few days. Stitches generally dissolve within a week or two after surgery. Most patients are up and moving in a few days following their breast lift surgery.
Breast lift surgery does pose some risks, just like any other surgery. By following post-operative instructions after having plastic surgery, you are more likely to recover more easily and have the results you’re looking for.

Learn about mommy makeovers from your Indianapolis plastic surgeon.
Are you unhappy with the way your body looks after one or more pregnancies? Although exercise can be very helpful, it's not always enough to lift and firm sagging areas. Dr. Barbara Siwy, a plastic surgeon serving the Indianapolis area in Carmel and Bloomington, IN, explains how you can benefit from a mommy makeover.
What is a mommy makeover?
A mommy makeover targets the areas that concern many women after pregnancy: the breasts and abdomen. The makeover combines a tummy tuck with a breast lift to help you regain your slim, toned physique.
Help for sagging breasts
A breast lift not only raises sagging breasts but also improves their shape. If you've lost volume in your breasts after pregnancy, you may want to add implants during your surgery. During the procedure, which is performed under general anesthesia, excess tissue and skin will be removed and the breast tissue will be lifted. Your nipples and areolas, the darker circular areas that surround the nipples, will also be re-positioned. Sometimes, pregnancy can cause areolas to enlarge. If you're not happy with the size of your areolas, they can be reduced during the procedure.
After surgery, your breasts will be swollen and feel uncomfortable for a few days. Following your surgeon's instructions and wearing soft bras around the clock for about a month will help improve your comfort. Although you can resume normal activities that don't involve overhead lifting or strenuous activity after a few days, you'll probably need to schedule at least a week off from work to recover from the procedure.
A firmer abdomen
Your tummy tuck will also be performed using general anesthesia. Breast lifts are usually outpatient surgical procedures, but if you have a breast lift and a tummy tuck, you'll need to stay in the hospital overnight. Tummy tuck surgery involves tightening abdominal wall muscles and removing fat and extra skin from your abdomen through an incision that extends from hipbone to hipbone. Your navel will also be re-positioned during the procedure.
Pain and swelling is common after a tummy tuck and can be controlled with prescription medications. Due to the swelling, you may be concerned that the tummy tuck wasn't successful, but once it decreases, you'll enjoy a noticeably flatter abdomen. You'll need to take at least two to four weeks off after surgery and must not lift anything heavy, including small children, for the first few weeks after your tummy tuck.
A mommy makeover offers the ideal way to regain your pre-pregnancy figure. If you're interested in this type of plastic surgery, call Dr. Siwy, your plastic surgeon serving the Indianapolis area in Carmel and Bloomington, IN, at (317) 876-7777 to schedule an appointment.
Cosmetic procedures are exciting experiences for most patients, as it is a time to welcome new, positive changes in one’s self. After surgery is complete, patients are anxious to return to normality and be able to enjoy these changes. Many patients want to accelerate the recovery process, so they can return as quickly as possible to their normal daily life. Patients have the potential to significantly impact their recovery process, as one of the main variables affecting the length of recovery is how well they listen to and follow their physician’s recommendations. The following five tips are a few things every patient can do to increase their odds of a successful recovery.
1. DON’T PUSH THROUGH THE PAIN
If you experience pain after the procedure, it is important to take the medicine prescribed by your physician. Many patients will attempt to be “strong” and push through the pain, but it is important to control pain by staying ahead of it and not letting it catch up to you. Blood pressure can increase as a result of pain, and in some cases this could lead to more bruising, which delays recovery time. Additionally, it is important to avoid over-the-counter medicines that could affect blood clotting for at least two weeks after your surgery, such as aspirin, Motrin, vitamin E, or herbal medicines. Tylenol is often a safe alternative; however, it is always best to consult with your surgeon before taking any over-the-counter medication. When taking prescription pain pills, it is important to drink lots of fluids. Pain pills can cause constipation, and to counteract this it is important to stay hydrated and move around frequently.
2. GET MOVING
Get plenty of rest in the first day or two post-surgery; however don’t continuously lie around and do nothing. Even if you don’t feel like going out for a long walk, taking a walk around your house or going outside for some fresh air is much better than doing nothing. Moving helps the body heal, and may also reduce pain. It also helps reduce your odds of constipation, which is a common side effect of prescription pain medication.
3. WEAR YOUR COMPRESSION GARMENTS
Surgery may require one to wear a compression garment; this varies based on the type of procedure, but can be required for up to 8 weeks with a tummy tuck or liposuction and 1-2 weeks for breast augmentation and breast lift. Compression garments help control swelling and bruising by compressing the tissues, which helps the body reabsorb accumulated edema fluid. It also helps with contouring by preventing wrinkling of the skin and enhancing skin retraction. Pressure has often been shown to improve the appearance of scars, and the compression garments may make the scar softer, flatter, and less visible.
4. SKIP THE WORKOUT
Many cosmetic patients are anxious to return to their regular workout routines, however, it is important to do so in a safe manner that will not jeopardize the surgery results. For the first 48 hours, it is important to not be too active. To speed up recovery, it is important for the patient to avoid rigorous exercise for the first 8 weeks. The time will vary based on the type of surgery performed. Working out raises blood pressure, and elevated blood pressure can increase bruising and bleeding which leads to inflammation and swelling. Patients who engage in vigorous workout regimens too soon after surgery can experience serious complications, such as re-opening of incisions, which can result in worse post-operative scars. Even if the patient thinks they are ready, it is very important to stay out of the gym until one has completely healed, as it could significantly delay recovery time more than if the patient had adhered to their activity restrictions.
5. NO SMOKING
Avoidance of smoking is a given for any of my patients. I generally advise smokers to cease smoking 8 weeks before an operation, and just because the surgery is over does not mean they are clear to light up again. Smoking significantly delays the healing process, and can lead to serious complications during recovery. Nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict, making them smaller and decreasing the blood supply to the tissues. Blood clots are more common in people who smoke. Tissues that are not receiving an adequate blood supply may not heal correctly, which increases the occurrence of complications. This will delay the recovery process, and ideal results for which the surgery was intended might not be achieved.
Every surgery is different, and the healing process will vary based on the type of surgery one undergoes. The recovery process is customized to each individual patient, his or her health, and their reaction to the surgery. It is very important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to ensure a healthy and speedy recovery that allows your body to heal properly, and provides you with ultimate results.
Find out if abdominoplasty is the right cosmetic procedure for eliminating your belly fat?
Have you been trying to exercise regularly and eat right? Have you replaced unhealthy afternoon snacks with healthy choices? Have you opted for making healthy meals rather than eating at restaurants? These are all great ways to lose weight, but for some people, no matter their efforts, still find stubborn fat around certain areas of the body that they just can’t seem to lose. If this is the case, find out from our Carmel, IN plastic surgeon, Dr. Barbara Siwy, if a tummy tuck could finally give you the results you want.
What does a tummy tuck do?
A tummy tuck is designed to remove excess fat and skin from the abdomen to give you a flatter and more toned stomach. In some cases, a tummy tuck can also help to rebuild abdominal muscles that have become weak or separated.
Who might be a good candidate for abdominoplasty?
This treatment is ideal for both men and women who are in good health. Since you will be undergoing surgery, candidates should be non-smokers (as smoking can impede the healing process). Women who are dealing with weakened muscles or sagging abdominal skin due to pregnancy will often find a tummy tuck the best option for getting a smoother stomach.
Tummy tucks are also a great option for patients who were overweight, obese or have lost a significant amount of weight, but still carry loose skin and fatty deposits in the stomach region.
Anyone interested in getting a tummy tuck will need to be evaluated by our Carmel, IN cosmetic surgery to make sure your treatment goals align with what this procedure can offer. Ideal candidates will also be realistic about their cosmetic goals.
Who isn’t right for this cosmetic surgery?
For women still planning to have children, this procedure might be one to consider at a later date, as the abdominal muscles may separate again during pregnancy and reverse your results.
If you are also planning to lose a lot more weight then you will want to wait until after your weight has stabilized to consider getting a tummy tuck.
You can also expect a visible abdominal scar from this procedure. If this is something that might be unappealing or concerning to you, then this might not be the right cosmetic treatment for you. But we will be happy to sit down and discuss other options that might work best for what you are looking to achieve.

Your eyelids may feel a little tight at first, but most people who have eyelid surgery don't experience any significant pain. You'll return to your plastic surgeon's office on the fifth or sixth day following surgery for stitch removal.
You can return to work seven to 10 days after the procedure, but you'll need to avoid participating in strenuous activity for three weeks.
